Herniated Disc FAQ
In between each of the vertebrae in your spine are small discs; these discs are filled with a fluid that helps to create a cushion in between each of your vertebrae. A herniated disc occurs when some of the fluid from inside the disc gets pushed out or otherwise displaced. In some cases, a herniated disc can be a very painful condition which may require treatment from our experienced and trusted chiropractor in Queens.
What Causes a Herniated Disc?
There are essentially two ways in which a herniated disc can develop. Most commonly, it's simply caused by natural degeneration of the disc over time. As you age, the fluid within the disc becomes less abundant and the disc itself can become worn, making you more prone to such an injury. On the other hand, herniated discs can sometimes be caused by a severe injury or trauma, such as a sudden impact from a car accident.
What Are the Common Symptoms?
In most cases, those who are suffering from a herniated disc will experience tenderness or pain in the back. Sometimes, the pain is very centralized around the disc itself, but it's also common for the pain to be more general along the spine. Sometimes, a person who has a herniated disc will not experience any symptoms at all. In these cases, there is usually no need for treatment unless the herniated disc begins to cause pain.
How Are Herniated Discs Diagnosed?
An experienced chiropractic team can generally assume a herniated disc is the problem based on the symptoms described by the patient and the location of the pain. However, an official diagnosis is usually done through an MRI or CT scan. Usually, a chiropractor will need to provide a prescription to the patient to have one of these scans done at a local hospital or doctor's office.
What Are the Treatment Options?
Your best treatment option for a herniated disc will vary based on the severity of your pain and the extent of the injury. In some cases, basic chiropractic care, in addition to injections or even regular physical therapy appointments will suffice in healing the disc and relieving your pain. However, in more severe cases or those that do not respond to physical therapy and chiropractic care, surgery may be necessary.
